Main Concept

Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is a crowdsourcing marketplace that provides access to a large distributed virtual workforce of real humans to perform simple, scalable tasks. Behind every task is an actual person — not automation — completing work that is easy to distribute but difficult or impractical to fully automate.

Key Idea

  • Not AI → the “intelligence” is human, not machine.

  • The illusion → the original 1770 Mechanical Turk appeared to be a chess-playing robot, but a human operator was hidden inside. The AWS service is named after this — humans doing work that appears automated.

  • When to use → any task that requires human judgment at scale and cannot be fully automated.

How It Works

Requesters (companies or developers) post tasks called HITs (Human Intelligence Tasks). Workers anywhere in the world accept and complete these tasks for a small reward set by the requester.

A company has 10 million images that need to be labeled for an ML training dataset. Requester posts: “Label this image — reward: 0.10 = $1,000,000.

The key insight: this would be impossible to do manually with a small internal team but trivially distributable to a global workforce.

Content review          → review recommendations, flag inappropriate content
Business processing     → simple repetitive tasks like filling spreadsheets

Why It Matters for AI/ML

MTurk is primarily used in the ML lifecycle for data labeling — the process of annotating training data so supervised learning models can learn from it. High-quality labeled data is the foundation of good ML models, and MTurk provides the human workforce to generate it at scale.

MTurk + A2I together

Amazon Rekognition flags an image as uncertain during content moderation. Amazon A2I routes that image to an Amazon Mechanical Turk worker for human review. The worker’s decision is returned to the system and can feed back into retraining Rekognition.

Analogy

A2I is the manager who decides which cases need human review and routes them accordingly. MTurk is the pool of workers the manager sends those cases to. A2I manages the process; MTurk provides the people.
